Is It Haram to Get a Tattoo?
Short answer: Getting a tattoo is prohibited by authentic hadith (Sahih al-Bukhari 5933) and classical consensus. But — and search results rarely lead with this — already having tattoos does not invalidate your prayers, your wudu, or your Islam, and repentance does not require removal.

The Prophet ﷺ cursed the woman who tattoos and the one who is tattooed (Sahih al-Bukhari 5933, 5946) — classical scholars took this as prohibition of permanently altering Allah’s creation (an idea the hadith itself links via 4:119).

Scholars are clear on this: sincere repentance suffices. Removal is not required — laser removal involves harm and cost, and Islam does not demand harming yourself to undo the past.
