Is It Haram to Kill Spiders or Ants?
Short answer: Ants are explicitly on the list of creatures the Prophet ﷺ forbade killing (Abu Dawud 5267) — spiders are not on any protected list. The working rule: harmful creatures may be killed, harmless ones should be removed or left alone, and cruelty is forbidden across the board.
The protected list
The Prophet ﷺ forbade killing four creatures: ants, bees, hoopoes and sparrow-hawks (Sunan Abi Dawud 5267, graded sahih). And he rebuked a prophet of the past for burning an ant colony over one bite: "because one ant bit you, you destroyed a nation that glorifies Allah?" (Sahih al-Bukhari 3019, Sahih Muslim 2241).
Practically: an ant problem in the house is handled by removal and prevention first; scholars permit pest control when they cause real harm — without fire, which the texts specifically condemn.
The harmful list
Five harmful creatures may be killed even by a pilgrim in ihram: the rat, the scorpion, the crow, the kite, and the rabid dog (Sahih al-Bukhari 1829) — establishing the principle that genuinely harmful creatures may be dispatched.
So — spiders?
No authentic text protects or condemns spiders specifically. A venomous spider is treated like the scorpion; a harmless one has no sanctity but killing without reason sits poorly with the mercy that runs through all these texts — a cup and a piece of paper cost nothing.
