Dreaming of being pregnant: what the Islamic tradition says

In the Islamic tradition, a dream of being pregnant is usually read as something growing in your life, such as provision, a plan or a hope taking shape. It is not a forecast of an actual pregnancy. The dream can come whether or not you are expecting, and to men as well as women.

What the Qur’an says

Whether a child is there, or ever will be, sits within Allah’s knowledge. A dream does not reach into it, which is why the tradition reads pregnancy dreams as symbols.

What the classical tradition reads into it

• Pregnancy was classically read as increase and provision: something good taking shape and growing, or wealth and blessing gathering quietly in one’s life.
• It was also read as a new beginning or project that you are carrying: a plan, a responsibility or a hope maturing slowly toward its time.
• Occasionally it was read as a weight or worry being carried, a burden held until it is delivered and relieved. Same image, opposite mood, which is typical of how these readings work.
• For a man, the same logic applied to a growing matter or responsibility in his affairs. Interpreters did not read anything literal into it.
