Dua for Bad Thoughts
When the mind is invaded by ugly, blasphemous or obsessive thoughts, many people quietly panic that they are sinning. The Prophet ﷺ gave the opposite reassurance — and a simple, powerful practice.
أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ
Aʿūdhu billāhi minash-shayṭānir-rajīm.
"I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan." — said the moment the thought comes, then turn your attention away.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3276, Sahih Muslim 134 — when Shaytan whispers "who created Allah?", seek refuge in Allah and desist
آمَنْتُ بِاللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِ
Āmantu billāhi wa rusulih.
"I believe in Allah and His messengers." — the reply the Prophet ﷺ taught for that whisper.
Sahih Muslim 134
How and when to say it
The Prophet ﷺ taught that feeling distressed by such a thought is itself "a clear sign of faith" (Sahih Muslim 132–134) — the distress means you reject it, not that you accept it.
Do not argue with the thought or try to "solve" it — seek refuge, say the words above, and move your attention to something else.
If the thoughts are relentless and disrupt your life, that can be waswas of a clinical kind — the sunnah of refuge stands alongside seeking help from a professional; both are legitimate.

What dua do you say for intrusive or bad thoughts?
Seek refuge: "A’udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim," then say "Amantu billahi wa rusulih" ("I believe in Allah and His messengers") and turn your attention away (Sahih al-Bukhari 3276, Sahih Muslim 134).
Are intrusive blasphemous thoughts a sin in Islam?
No. The Prophet ﷺ taught that being distressed by such a whisper is a sign of faith (Sahih Muslim 132–134). A thought you hate and reject is not held against you — Allah pardons what the self whispers unless it is acted on or spoken (Sahih al-Bukhari 5269).
How do I stop waswas in prayer?
Seek refuge in Allah and lightly spit (blow) to your left three times, as the Prophet ﷺ taught the companion troubled by waswas in prayer (Sahih Muslim 2203), then gently return your focus without restarting.
