Dua for the Deceased
A companion who heard the Prophet ﷺ pray over a deceased person said he wished it had been him who died, because of what he heard. This is that dua.
Allāhumma-ghfir lahu warḥamhu wa ʿāfihi waʿfu ʿanhu, wa akrim nuzulahu wa wassiʿ mudkhalahu, waghsilhu bil-mā’i wath-thalji wal-barad, wa naqqihi minal-khaṭāyā kamā naqqaytath-thawbal-abyaḍa minad-danas.
"O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him; keep him safe and pardon him. Honour his arrival and widen his entrance. Wash him with water, snow and hail, and cleanse him of sins as a white garment is cleansed of stain."
Sahih Muslim 963 (opening portion) — change the pronoun for a woman (lahā/hā) or for several people
How and when to say it
It is said in the funeral prayer after the third takbir, and can be made at any time for someone who has passed.
Dua is one of the few gifts that still reaches the dead — alongside ongoing charity and knowledge they left behind (Sahih Muslim 1631).
For your own parents, the Qur’anic duas continue to count for them after death.
