Held to be a true and blessed sight, when he appears in his real shape.
Heritage, not prophecy. Only Allah knows the unseen (27:65).
If you saw the Prophet ﷺ in a dream, the authentic hadith speak to it directly: whoever sees him has truly seen him, because Satan cannot take his form. That is a real comfort. An early comment recorded with the hadith adds a quiet condition: that he be seen in his real shape. Only Allah knows for certain what any single dream was. Hold it with gratitude and humility, and let it draw you toward his sunnah.

“He who saw me in a dream in fact saw me”
Sahih Muslim 2266
The Prophet ﷺ gave the reason in the same sentence: Satan does not appear in his form. A true sight of him is not something to fear.
“Satan cannot imitate me in shape”
Sahih al-Bukhari 6993
Right after this hadith, al-Bukhari records an early comment: only if he is seen in his real shape. The promise is about him as he truly was, which is why the tradition treats these dreams with care.
People often wake from this dream with two feelings at once: joy, and a fear of claiming too much. You do not have to settle which it was tonight. What matters is the longing it left behind, and where you let it lead you. Is there one small sunnah of his you could bring back into your day?
If you saw him ﷺ, there is nothing here to fear. Thank Allah, send salawat on him, and let the dream lead you to his sunnah rather than to claims about yourself. If you are unsure it was him, that is fine too. The love that made you hope it was him is already a good thing, and Allah knows the rest.
Thank Allah for it. If you tell it, tell someone who loves you or someone with sound judgment.

The tradition reads a true sight of him as a blessing and an invitation to follow his sunnah, held with gratitude rather than pride.
No. The Prophet ﷺ said that Satan cannot imitate his shape (Sahih al-Bukhari 6993 and 6994). The protection is for his true form, which is why an early comment recorded with the hadith adds the condition that he be seen as he really was.
Honestly, you cannot know for certain, and you do not need to. Al-Bukhari records, right after the hadith, an early comment: only if he is seen in his real shape, as the authentic descriptions portray him. If you are unsure, thank Allah for the love behind the dream and leave the certainty with Him.
Treat it with care. A dream cannot add to the religion or change what he taught while awake, which is complete in the Qur’an and sunnah. If what you heard agrees with his teaching, it is a reminder of something already there. If it seems to contradict it, hold to what he taught while awake.
