How Muslims fall asleep peacefully: Ayat al-Kursi, the three Quls & Surah Mulk
Fourteen centuries before "sleep hygiene" became a phrase, the Prophet ๏ทบ had a complete wind-down ritual โ recitations, a posture, a final sentence to end the day on. Here it is, step by step, with sources. Then: how to actually keep the habit in the age of the glowing screen.
Step 1 โ Ayat al-Kursi
โAllah โ there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleepโฆโ
Qur'an 2:255 (opening) ยท Saheeh International
In Sahih al-Bukhari, the one who recites Ayat al-Kursi on going to bed is promised a guardian from Allah through the night (al-Bukhari 2311). There is a quiet poetry in it: you drift into sleep reciting about the One who never does.
Step 2 โ The three Quls, into your palms
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) related that every night the Prophet ๏ทบ would cup his palms, recite Surah al-Ikhlas, Surah al-Falaq and Surah an-Nas into them, blow gently, and wipe over his body โ beginning with the head and face โ three times (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017).
It takes under two minutes, and it's wonderfully physical โ a ritual your body learns, not just your mind.
Step 3 โ Surah al-Mulk
The Prophet ๏ทบ would not sleep until he recited Surah as-Sajdah and Surah al-Mulk (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2892), and he described al-Mulk as an intercessor for the one who keeps its company (at-Tirmidhi 2891). Thirty verses โ read them, or let a soft recitation carry you.
Step 4 โ The last sentence of the day

Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya.
In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.

Making it stick in 2026
The honest obstacle isn't knowing the ritual โ it's the phone. A realistic protocol:
- Trade the feed for a recitation. If the phone will be in your hand anyway, let it play a soft recitation with a fade-out timer instead of feeding you one more video.
- Anchor the Quls to a physical cue โ palms cupped, lights already off. Body memory beats willpower.
- Don't aim for perfect. Ayat al-Kursi alone, done nightly, outweighs the full ritual done twice a month.
Soft recitations, prophet stories, rain and wind โ with a timer that fades everything gently. That's Hush's sleep room.
