Dua for Travelling
Whenever the Prophet ﷺ sat on his mount to travel, he would say "Allahu akbar" three times, then this dua. It works the same on a plane seat as it did on a camel.
Subḥānal-ladhī sakhkhara lanā hādhā wa mā kunnā lahu muqrinīn, wa innā ilā Rabbinā lamunqalibūn. Allāhumma innā nas’aluka fī safarinā hādhā al-birra wat-taqwā, wa minal-ʿamali mā tarḍā. Allāhumma hawwin ʿalaynā safaranā hādhā waṭwi ʿannā buʿdah.
"Glory to the One who subjected this to us, and we could never have done it ourselves — and to our Lord we will surely return. O Allah, we ask You on this journey of ours for righteousness and taqwa, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and fold up its distance."
Sahih Muslim 1342 — the opening lines are Qur’an 43:13–14; the full narration continues with protection from the hardship of travel
How and when to say it
Begin with "Allahu akbar" three times as you set off, then the dua — exactly as the narration describes.
The same narration adds a dua for the return journey, and seeking refuge from the hardships of travel and a bad return to family.
Short version if you’re pressed: the Qur’anic lines alone (43:13–14) are the heart of it.
