Dreaming of clothes: what the Islamic tradition says
In the Islamic tradition, clothes in a dream are most often read as a person’s religion and state, because the Prophet ﷺ saw people wearing shirts of different lengths and interpreted them as religion. Clean, white and modest clothes are usually read as good. None of this measures your faith. It is an old, gentle image for something you can tend while awake.

The Prophet ﷺ saw people in shirts, some reaching only the chest, and Umar dragging a long one. He interpreted the shirts as religion. This is the root of reading clothes in a dream as faith.
يَٰبَنِىٓ ءَادَمَ قَدْ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكُمْ لِبَاسًۭا يُوَٰرِى سَوْءَٰتِكُمْ وَرِيشًۭا ۖ وَلِبَاسُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ ذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌۭ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ مِنْ ءَايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَ
O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best. That is from the signs of Allah that perhaps they will remember.

The Qur’an itself moves from cloth to character: Allah gave clothing to cover and adorn, but the clothing of righteousness is best. Interpreters followed that thread.
What the classical tradition reads into it
- The main reading is religion, following the dream of shirts the Prophet ﷺ interpreted (Sahih al-Bukhari 23 and 7008). Clothes that cover well are often read as faith in good shape, and very short ones as faith that needs tending.
- Clean, white clothes are widely read as good: sound religion, a clear conscience, or ease in one’s affairs. They are among the more hopeful clothing images in the tradition.
- Dirty or torn clothes are often read as worry or a need to cleanse, something to wash rather than something to fear. Some interpreters link washing clothes in a dream with repentance and a fresh start.
- New clothes are often read as renewal, a change in one’s state, and putting on clothes as being covered and protected, echoing the Qur’an’s picture of clothing as a gift that covers and adorns (7:26).
