Dreaming of dogs: what the Islamic tradition says

In the classical Islamic interpretive tradition, a dog in a dream was usually read as a certain kind of person: a persistent adversary, or someone harsh who barks and harries. A calm dog was read more gently. Dogs carry specific rulings in Islamic law, but a dream about one is a separate matter, a symbol and not a fatwa.

• A dog was often read as a persistent adversary, or a person of low, aggressive character: someone who barks and harries and does not let others be.
• A biting dog was sometimes read as harm or hostility reaching the dreamer from such a person. It was a reading of a symbol, and it is no reason to suspect a real neighbour or colleague.
• A calm or loyal dog was occasionally read more gently, as a faithful if lowly friend, or as protection. The same animal could stand for guarding as easily as for harm.
• The reading always bent to the dream and the dreamer. It was careful, uncertain reasoning about one person’s night, never a fixed code you can apply to your own.
