Dreaming of fish: what the Islamic tradition says
In Islamic dream interpretation, fish are most often read as rizq, provision, and a good catch as sustenance arriving, sometimes from an unexpected source. Rotten fish was read the other way. Drawn up from the depths of the sea, fish became a classic picture of provision that comes from where you were not looking. Here is that heritage, framed honestly.
What the Qur’an says
وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى سَخَّرَ ٱلْبَحْرَ لِتَأْكُلُوا۟ مِنْهُ لَحْمًۭا طَرِيًّۭا وَتَسْتَخْرِجُوا۟ مِنْهُ حِلْيَةًۭ تَلْبَسُونَهَا وَتَرَى ٱلْفُلْكَ مَوَاخِرَ فِيهِ وَلِتَبْتَغُوا۟ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ
And it is He who subjected the sea for you to eat from it tender meat and to extract from it ornaments which you wear. And you see the ships plowing through it, and [He subjected it] that you may seek of His bounty; and perhaps you will be grateful.

The Qur'an names the sea's tender meat among Allah's gifts, given so that you may seek His bounty and be grateful. It is the same thread the tradition follows when it reads fish as provision.
What the classical tradition reads into it
- Fresh fish, or a good catch, was often read as provision and sustenance: good reaching the dreamer, sometimes from a source nobody expected.
- Many fish were read as abundance or wealth, and a single large fish as one significant gain. Interpreters counted and weighed, but only ever as careful, uncertain reasoning.
- Rotten or foul fish was read the other way, as tainted gain, or as something better left alone. Even here the tradition described a possibility, not a judgment on anyone.
- Catching, eating or simply watching the fish each shaded the reading differently. It stayed careful, uncertain and personal reasoning, never a formula you can look up and apply.

The honest bottom line
A fish dream promises nothing. Allah alone is the Provider (Qur'an 51:58), and what is written for you does not depend on what you saw in your sleep. If the dream gladdened you, let it turn you toward gratitude and trust. If it unsettled you, set the unease down with the sunnah and go on with your day.
