Someone dying

Dreaming of someone dying: what the Islamic tradition says
If you dreamed that a living person died and woke up frightened, start here: in the classical Islamic tradition this is not read as a sign that they will die. More often it is read the other way, as long life or a change in their state. And no dream knows anyone’s appointed time. That stays with Allah.

ٱللَّهُ يَتَوَفَّى ٱلْأَنفُسَ حِينَ مَوْتِهَا وَٱلَّتِى لَمْ تَمُتْ فِى مَنَامِهَا ۖ فَيُمْسِكُ ٱلَّتِى قَضَىٰ عَلَيْهَا ٱلْمَوْتَ وَيُرْسِلُ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍۢ مُّسَمًّى ۚ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَٰتٍۢ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ
Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.
Az-Zumar 39:42 · Saheeh International
In this verse Allah takes souls in sleep and returns them, keeping only those whose death He has decreed. The term is His, and a death you see in a dream does not set it.

Sahih al-Bukhari 7004
A companion grieving a man who had died saw a flowing spring for him in a dream, and the Prophet ﷺ read it as his good deeds. That was his reading for that man, but it shows dreams about the dead were received with hope, not dread.
What the classical tradition reads into it
- Dreaming that a living person dies was classically read, more often than not, as long life for them, or as a change and renewal in their state. It was not read as their actual death.
- Sometimes it was read as a weakening of faith or a hardship passing through that person’s life. Here too the tradition read a passing state, not an end.
- Dreaming of someone already deceased was often read as a gentle nudge that they may benefit from your dua and charity on their behalf. If they looked peaceful, take comfort. The dead are not harmed by our dreams.
- Dreaming of your own death was frequently read as a turning point, such as repentance or a new chapter, rather than a warning of literal death.
